On Friday, fiery spurts of lava erupted and were preceded by thousands of tiny earthquakes, and they weren’t due to Angelina Jolie frothing up a blistering, rage-filled thought about ex-husband Brad Pitt and their five-year divorce debacle from hell. This eruption was from a non-human volcano, and we rarely get to talk about those. Björk, who resides not far from the volcano at Fagradalsfjall on Reykjanes peninsula, was especially excited about the eruption (fortunately, there were no injuries and no evacuations were required), as she’d filmed her video for Black Lake there in 2015.
According to The New York Times:
The eruption occurred on Friday evening near Mount Fagradalsfjall, about 20 miles southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said on Twitter. The agency said that the lava fountains were small by volcano standards, and that seismometers were not recording much turbulence.
“YESSS !! , eruption !!” the Icelandic singer Björk wrote on Facebook and Instagram, noting that she had once filmed a music video at the site.
“We in iceland are sooo excited !!!” she added. “We still got it !!! sense of relief when nature expresses herself !!!”
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake took place on February 24, which led to tens of thousands of smaller quakes in the weeks that followed, and Icelanders braced themselves for an eruption from this volcano for the first time in 800 years. Excitement easily eclipsed dread for locals, and there was even a livestream to capture every moment.

As awe-inspiring as these events are, and as reverent and delighted as Björk clearly is, it’s still St. Angie for the win for pure, far-reaching devastation!
