Taco Bell will always be the worse attempt at Mexican food known to man. There’s a reason why their slogan was “Run For The Border” for years because once you eat it you’ll definitely be running…to the bathroom. In other words, it’s only good for drunken nights on a tight budget and nothing else. But try proving that to Sam Reid, a proud Virginia resident who believes in the power of Doritos Locos Tacos as a superfood. And to prove his claim Sam is going to pull a Super Size Me, but instead of eating McDonald’s for thirty days as Morgan Spurlock did, he’s eating nothing but Taco Bell for thirty days straight to end the debate on fast food being unhealthy once and for all.
Apparently, Taco Bell underwent a major overhaul of its menu and added a bunch of healthier options thanks to dietician/product developer Missy Nelson. Business Insider reported in a 2016 article that these options were introduced in a very low-key manner, but they help aid those who don’t want the bubble-guts fifteen minutes after ingesting an entire beef and bean burrito.
Since Nelson joined the Taco Bell team, she has made huge strides towards taking out all artificial ingredients, switching to cage-free eggs, and offering lighter (but still delicious) options. On top of all that, there has been a 15% reduction in sodium across all menu items, which is subtly a brilliant move.
Enter: Sam Reid. WDBJ-7 reports that Sam read Business Insider’s article and thought to himself “Sign Me Up!” as he began his one-man quest to eat three meals a day from Taco Bell’s menu for thirty days. He wants to prove that “healthy” fast food can make you healthier. But he’s taking proper precautions along the way.
I’ll do three meals a day, so a total of 90 meals, and I am going to abide by the rule that during the month I have to eat every single item on the menu at least once,” he says, explaining the rules for himself.
But can fast food actually help you ‘Live Mas’? Well, that’s exactly what Reid is trying to find out.
“My hypothesis is that healthy fast food can actually help you become healthier,” he explains. “I don’t think it’s so much about the type of food or the brand of food, but it’s about making healthy and informed choices when we eat.”
Reid will visit multiple doctors during the experiment to track his health.
“The things that I’m measuring aren’t just weight. I’m actually measuring percent body fat, cholesterol, sodium, blood pressure, and I’ll be doing some fitness tests as well to see if I can maintain my level of physical fitness.”
Sam, we’re rooting for you buddy! But from afar. Because the amount of gas your body is about to emit will be more noxious than a nuclear power plant.
