If you’re like me, then you watched the 2021 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest live on ESPN (we all deserve to be judged for that). If you did, you probably screamed over the American tragedy of ESPN’s feed messing up just as the wiener gobbler of all wiener gobblers, Joey Chestnut, shoved his 76th water-soaked hot dog into his legendary eating hole to beat the record he set last year. Honestly, I don’t know if it was a Fourth of July gift or a Fourth of July curse to not see Joey Chestnut keep the hot dog vom from coming up his throat by shoving another hot dog in there. Probably the former. But Joey Chestnut’s reign as the King of Wiener Swallowing (yes, I’m jealous of him for having that title) continues since he won Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest for the 14th time.
37-year-old Joey Chestnut got his first Hot Dog Eating Contest win in 2007 by putting 66 wet wieners and soaked buns in his stomach. Since then, he’s only lost once. In 2015, Matt Stonie ended Joey Chestnut’s 8-year victory. But the next year in 2016, Joey got his crown back and he’s been winning every year ever since. Last year, Joey beat his own record by eating 75 hot dogs in 10 minutes. And this year, he beat that record by eating 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Do you hear that self-proclaimed glory hole queens? Joey swallowed 76 wieners in 10 minutes. You’ve been challenged!

76 hot dogs may seem like a lot, but TMZ broke it down into calories. And honestly, 76 hot dogs is the caloric equivalent of a small appetizer at the Cheesecake Factory:
BTW, if you’re wondering what he wolfed down in 10 minutes by the nutrition facts numbers — it amounted to 22,800 calories, 1,368 grams of fat, 1,824 grams of carbs and 836 grams of protein.
As for the women, my personal favorite, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas did not compete, and neither did last year’s winner Miki Sudo (because she’s 8 months pregnant). Michelle Lesco became the women’s hot-dog-eating champion by putting away 30¾ hot dogs in 10 minutes:

So yeah, that gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico isn’t this weekend’s only “eye of fire.” Joey Chestnut’s definitely dealing with a brown eye of fire today. And on that note, Happy USA Day, all!
