I watched this new trailer for the Ryan Murphy’s take on the Broadway musical The Prom for Netflix and thought, “oh, so it’s like if Ryan Murphy did Glee” and it took me waaaaay too long to remember that Ryan Murphy actually made Glee so now I guess I’ll say “oh, it’s like if 2010 Ryan Murphy had 2020 Ryan Murphy money plus Meryl Streep!” Or maybe since Nicole Kidman is in it, it’s more like, “oh, so it’s Baz Luhrmann Presents: Glee.” At any rate The Prom is very, very shiny.

Here’s the trailer which features Meryl, Nicole, Andrew Rannells, Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key, and a giant hairless cat in a sequins dinner jacket.

According to Entertainment Weekly, here’s what the fuck is going on here.

Directed by Ryan Murphy and adapted from the celebrated Broadway musical of the same name, The Prom tells the story of a troupe of self-obsessed theaters stars — played here by Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells — who descend on a conservative small town in Indiana to take up the cause of Emma (Jo Ellen Pellman), a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose), to the prom.

The trailer features the core quartet of washed-up Broadway stars who make Emma’s prom their cause, as well as the community from the Indiana school at the heart of the narrative, including Alyssa’s mom, conservative PTA president Mrs. Greene (Kerry Washington), and Emma’s confidante Mr. Hawkins (Keegan-Michael Key). It’s bursting with sequins and glitter, joyous musical numbers, and a monster truck rally (it will make sense in context, we promise).

EW adds that some of the scenes in The Prom were actually filmed in the same Los Angeles high school that Glee was filmed, the halls of which were probably still vibrating from having experienced The Wrath of Lea Michele. Too bad that there probably won’t be a red carpet premiere for her to attend because as legendary as The Jessica Lange Snub was, a Very Meryl Dismissal would be a moment for the ages!
