Tonight’s Met Gala theme, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, will surely bring a delightfully tacky coterie of black blazers, neckties, folding fans, powdered wig ponytails, and hater shades. But one refreshing element many were looking forward to was the late Karl’s beloved 12-year-old cat, Choupette Lagerfeld, accepting her invitation to the event and asshole-out strutting down the red carpet as the fashion community creams their tailored black suit pants. But, perhaps Choupette was thoroughly put off from public life after recently being cradled in an awkward football hold by Naomi Campbell in Vogue with the looming threat of being whipped at an assistant at any second; because Choupette’s Instagram account just posted that she’ll be sitting out the Met tonight.
Karl and Choupette’s auspicious convergence happened back in 2011 when Karl was cat-sitting her for a friend and ended up acting like a complete Kunty Karl by deciding not to give her back. via AP News:
The white Birmin with stunning blue eyes and creamy markings akin to baked Alaska was born Aug. 15, 2011. At 10 weeks or so, she was given to Baptiste Giabiconi, one of Lagerfeld’s model friends in Paris.
It was Giabiconi who named her Choupette, a nickname in French for “cute girls.” Giabiconi asked Lagerfeld to care for the cat for two weeks while he was on holiday. As Lagerfeld described to New York magazine in 2018: “When he came back, I told him that the cat was not returning to his house, and I kept it, this kind of genius creature.”
Since Karl couldn’t fulfill his wish to marry Choupette, he instead opted to make her an internationally recognizable star with maids, bodyguards, an agent, designer accessories, and an inheritance; but she decided that staying home and loudly slurping at her graceful, fully extended skyward back leg was a better way to honor her place within Karl’s legacy tonight. Here’s her elegant, bilingual rejection:
Without question, someone is coming to the Met Gala dressed as Choupette tonight. My pick? Doja Cat, cradled in Jared Leto’s arms as he yells about fat people in full method to prepare for the Karl biopic.
